TRIAGE: New work by Olivia B. McCullough
Triage is the process of determining the priority of patients' treatments based on the severity of their condition. (Wikipedia)
A vocabulary based in nature, my mark making is done with twigs, pods and bark. Working with natural materials has arisen from a lifelong penchant for collecting ‘natural artifacts’ while on walks or trips. They act as relics, tangible acknowledgements of nature’s gifts and mementos of these transformative experiences-always a source of inspiration.
Chosen for their physical characteristics, I use materials with potential for metaphor and psychological paradox. Thorns, for example, are seductive; strong, painful, yet fragile. They are nature’s defense and take many forms. Their inherent duality echos life’s conundrums.
My concerns about the environment and our limited resources informs much of my work. However, the work itself is birthed through an intuitive process. I prefer it to be less grounded, more abstract in it’s associations, allowing the viewer to bring their own perspective into the experience and creating an open ended conversation.
